About Elephant 

Globally there are mainly two extant species of elephants, 

1. The African elephant, 

2. The Asian elephant,

But after recent extensive studies and DNA testing, The Asian elephant falls into three distinct subspecies,
1. Elephant living in Sri Lanka,
2. Elephant living in mainland Asia.
3. Elephant living in the island of Sumatra.

The African elephant falls into two distinct species,
1. African bush elephant.  

2. African forest elephant.

Habitats - African elephant

1. Dense forest
2. Open and closed savanna grassland
3. Arid desert

Habitats - Asian elephant

1. Grassland
2. Forest
3. Scrubland

Elephants have been hunted for their tusks from centuries for trophies or for the art of ivory carving and jewelry making.
